Vienna’s development into one of Central Europe’s
largest and most distinguished cities is not least due to its
advantageous location. Between the north-easterly foothills of the
Alps, in the north-west of the Vienna basin (Wiener Becken) and
largely south of the Danube; Vienna lies at the intersection point
of ancient arterial roads, such as the West-East-Route of the Danube
and the historic North-South-Street (Bernsteinstraße). The city
developed into a pivotal point for European traffic and since the
fall of the Iron Curtain, transport and economic connexions with the
eastern neighbouring states have become more and more important.
